Wire-free robot mowers on hills
Three of the four confirmed mowers need no boundary wire. Only the Husqvarna does. On a steep yard that choice changes how the install goes. The sources don't say it changes how well the mower climbs.
Why a hill makes the wire question harder
Laying a boundary wire is dull work, and on a slope it is harder. You are working along a bank you may not want to stand on. That is the main argument for the no-wire models, where you drive the mower around the edge with your phone and it records the boundary.
The catch is that the mower has to know where it is on a tilted lawn without a wire telling it. The three wire-free mowers go about it in two ways:
- Dreame A3 AWD Pro and MOVA LiDAX Ultra 3000 AWD: a spinning laser (LiDAR) and cameras. No satellite signal needed.
- Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD: a laser and cameras on all sizes. The 3000 and 5000 add a satellite correction service that arrives over Wi-Fi or 4G, and the maker's page does not list one for the 1500.
Mammotion's page and TechRadar's reviewer both say there is no wire to bury, and TechRadar adds that you don't need to mount an RTK antenna.
What the reviewers did
Two of them tried automatic boundary mapping and then did it by hand. TechRadar's reviewer of the LUBA 3 "prefers" driving the boundary with the app's joysticks. Freshly Charged's reviewer of the MOVA said automatic mapping "performed fairly well" and then "went the manual mapping route for precision." That is two reviewers on two models. It is not a count of how often automatic mapping falls short.
The one hill-specific complaint on record: on the LUBA 3, the front wheels can tear the lawn in soft, shady spots during a zero-turn. Switching to a three-point turn is slower and fixes it, per TechRadar. That is a lawn-damage issue on one model from one reviewer, and Mammotion's own page doesn't mention it.
When the wire is the better pick
The Husqvarna 435X AWD is rated 70% inside the lawn but 50% at the boundary, and it costs $2,999.99, more than any of the wire-free models. Husqvarna sells a wire-free 435X AWD NERA on its UK site. No US version could be confirmed, so it is left out of the comparison.
The reasons to put up with a wire come down to preference. You might want a local dealer to install and service the mower, or you might trust a boundary you can see more than a map the mower drew. The spec sheets don't settle either one.
Before you buy any of them
- Measure your steepest stretch, and the steepest spot at the lawn edge. Here's how.
- Run the number through the yard checker.
- Ask the seller what the return window is. Mammotion lists 30-day returns on the LUBA 3 AWD page. Check the others on their own pages.
